In January 2020, Lisa Spencer became a trailblazer at the 48-year-old Henson Efron law firm, when she was named its first woman president.

In her leadership role, colleagues credit Spencer with helping the firm develop a niche in a marketplace where many firms have merged or been acquired.

A 2001 graduate of William Mitchell College of Law (now Mitchell Hamline School of Law), Spencer joined Henson Efron in 2001 after graduating college. Spencer has 23 years of experience in family law, handling a wide range of issues including business valuations, taxes, intellectual property, executive compensation, and nonmarital property.

As a women-led law firm, Spencer said, “we are committed to fostering inclusivity and empowering women across all levels of our organization.  We also advocate for positive change within our community and beyond, striving to create a more equitable and inclusive legal landscape.

“We’ve faced challenges like overcoming gender biases and ensuring equal opportunities for women lawyers and staff,” she said. “Navigating these issues requires resilience and strategic planning.”

Last year, the Minnesota State Bar Association recognized Spencer as one of its 2023 North Star Lawyers, who provided at least 50 hours of pro bono legal services annually to low-income people.
