Meet our staff
David Bohlander, Editor in Chief
David joined Minnesota Lawyer and Finance & Commerce in August 2013 and was promoted to Editor in Chief in January 2022. He stumbled into journalism his freshman year at the University of Minnesota, Morris when he volunteered to be a copy editor at the student newspaper. He graduated from UMM in 2004 with an English degree. After a couple years spent in restaurant management, David found his way back to journalism at the La Crosse (Wis.) Tribune, as a copy editor and page designer.

Jeff Sjerven, Managing Editor
Before joining Minnesota Lawyer and Finance & Commerce in April 2008, Jeff spent 21 years as a copy editor at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. At the Pioneer Press, Jeff served stints as news copy desk chief, deputy nation/world editor, and business desk copy editor. Jeff began his career in 1982 at the national desk of the Miami Herald. Jeff earned a B.S. degree in journalism at the University of Kansas.

Kendra Beneke, Associated Editor/Special Sections Editor
Kendra joined Minnesota Lawyer and Finance & Commerce in March 2022. She interned at New Rivers Press before graduating from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2018 with an integrated English and publishing degree. Following graduation, she dabbled in marketing and freelance writing.
Laura Brown, Staff Writer
Before joining Minnesota Lawyer as staff writer in 2021, Laura graduated cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Law, where she served as managing articles editor for the University of Illinois Law Review. She also interned for Judge William C. Griesbach, Eastern District of Wisconsin, as well as the Office of the U.S. Trustee. She is a member of the Ohio State Bar (inactive). Following law school, Brown studied at the University of Iowa. She holds graduate certificates in African American Studies and Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies, a Master of Arts degree in philosophy, and will earn her Ph.D. in social and political philosophy.
