m boulette, partner and practice group chair at Taft, has been a vocal champion for transgender Minnesotans during a challenging year.

In 2025, boulette represented dozens of transgender people on a pro bono or low bono basis in name changes, gender-marker corrections, and motions to make their court records private. They represented the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association and OutFront Minnesota as amicus in In re Application of Soto, a Minnesota Supreme Court case that could redefine the standards for children’s name changes, and Black & Pink Minneapolis in an amicus application in In re Application of Hanlon, a name-change case involving a transgender prisoner.

boulette is now leading the charge to change Minnesota’s court rules to protect the privacy of transgender Minnesotans. Representing the Minnesota State Bar Association, OutFront Minnesota, Transforming Families, the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association, and Gender Justice in In re Petition to Limit Access to Gender-Affirming Court Records, they are petitioning the Minnesota Supreme Court for rule changes to protect transgender court records.

The process has extended through much of 2025 as boulette engineered the proposed rule, vetted it with various stakeholders, and shepherded it through the bar association’s committees and assemblies to gain support. If adopted, the rule would ensure that all gender-affirming name-change or birth record correction cases are not publicly accessible, protecting transgender Minnesotans’ privacy, safety and security.

Over the last year, boulette also served as the first openly transgender and nonbinary president of the Hennepin County Bar Association, and has given regular public policy briefings and continuing legal education programs on the legal landscape of trans rights.

These contributions come while boulette maintains their successful practice as the only openly transgender practice chair at a Taft, a Minneapolis AmLaw 100 firm. They continue teaching at the University of St. Thomas School of Law and serving as author and editor of Minnesota Family Law.
