Acuna has remained detained for 14 to 15 months, with Rogers fighting for his freedom throughout.

Rogers also represented Jackie Merlos, a Portland mother who made headlines after being detained at a park with her family and held for more than four months in ICE custody. A judge terminated Merlos’ removal proceeding, but ICE appealed the decision. Within days of Rogers filing a habeas petition, ICE agreed to release her client.

Recognizing a widespread online scam targeting the Latino community — where fraudsters pose as immigration judges — Rogers has helped clients obtain visas available to crime victims. While recovering stolen money proves nearly impossible, these visas ease clients’ fears about deportation if they missed important court dates because of the scam.
