Todd Noteboom, partner at Stinson LLP, represents clients in complex securities litigation, arbitration and regulatory investigations and proceedings involving the SEC, FINRA, state banking and insurance regulators, and state attorneys general. He is co-chair of Stinson’s Financial Services and Insurance Industry Group and a member of the firm’s board of directors.

Over his more than 30-year career, he has defended major U.S. corporations against class actions, MLD proceedings and other aggregated exposures.

What are the biggest challenges you currently see in business litigation?

Escalating costs and declining civility, particularly with less experienced attorneys.

Without revealing the names of a client, what is the most interesting case you’ve worked on lately?

I’m currently defending a putative class action in federal court in Philadelphia brought by current and former Division 1 collegiate athletes who claim they are employees deserving of compensation for playing sports while in college. Many colleges and universities are named, and the court will hear our threshold motions to dismiss later this year.

How do you manage work/life balance?

Exercise, good wine, and time with friends and family.

What is one thing you would change about Minnesota if you could?

I would add a business court or business division to our state court bench, at least in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, so there were judges that were more focused on business disputes and who had more time to focus on cases that are often more demanding of their time.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I met my wife (Judge Nancy Brasel) at piano camp in Wisconsin when we were 13.
