What are the biggest misconceptions about the field of employment law?

First, employees are powerless relative to employers, and the rule of “at-will” employment means anything goes.

Without revealing the names of a client, what is the most interesting case you’ve worked on lately?

All of them? The honest answer is that Stephen and I only get involved in cases that intrigue us. Our recent employment cases involve people from all walks of life — from C-Suite executives, county leaders, city leaders, and police chiefs to principals, teachers, bankers, engineers, custodians, and manual laborers. In other civil rights cases, we represent students, athletes, consumers, and prisoners. The cases are fact-intensive, legally complex, and infused with public importance. In short, we care deeply about our clients and the laws that protect them.

How do you manage work/life balance?

I used to work at a large stellar firm downtown. Perhaps the biggest reason I left the big firm to start Premo Frank with my friend and law partner, Stephen Premo, was to achieve a better work-life balance. One way we do this is by being very selective about both the number and quality of the cases we take on.

What is one thing you would change about Minnesota if you could?

I feel like this is where I am supposed to say something about the weather, but after growing up in northeastern South Dakota, I learned to love and embrace all four seasons. Instead, if I could change anything about Minnesota, I’d make the Minnesota State Fair happen twice a year instead of once. The more cheese curds, the better.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I think capybaras are ridiculously cute.
