L.J. Rotman is a partner at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP and is the leader of the firm’s Real Estate & Construction Practice Group.
His practice is concentrated in real estate financing, acquisitions and workouts, and complex commercial transactions. Rotman has structured and negotiated billions of dollars of transactions globally.
He focuses his law practice on the hospitality and sports industries. His hotel clients include developers, investors, hotel operators, lenders, and receivers. Rotman has represented clients in acquiring and disposing of hotels, developing new brands and new hotels, as well as negotiating and structuring hotel management agreements with national hotel operators.
He has been primarily responsible with nearly every legal aspect of the hotels, from land development to liquor license approvals. Many of these hotel transactions have included related amenities such as casinos and golf courses.
Additionally, Rotman has handled notable sports venue transactions. These include Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins, and U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings.
In 2024, the $225 million sale of RBC Gateway Office Tower, in which Rotman represented United Properties, was named the “Most Significant Investment Sale Transaction” in the Minnesota Real Estate Journal’s 2024 Real Estate Awards. He was also among four finalists selected for male Real Estate Lawyer of the Year in the Journal’s 2024 Real Estate Awards.
The sale involved a 525,000-square-foot portion of the 1.2 million-square-foot, 37-story mixed-use project in downtown Minneapolis. The $225 million transaction was the largest sale price for office space in the Twin Cities and among the largest commercial real estate sales transactions in the United States in 2023.
“Working with the team from United Properties, the [Pohlad Companies] that owned the property, was a delight,” Rotman said.
Rotman has been on Minnesota Lawyer’s Power 30: Construction and Real Estate Law list since 2021.
