Robert Russell has been practicing law for over four decades. He practices real estate, estate planning, business law, and bankruptcy law in the Fergus Falls area, and he has served as Examiner of Titles for Otter Tail County since 1994.
While Russell has assisted in countless matters, he is concerned that people who need legal assistance with real estate matters cannot get it. Russell asserts that lawyers are not servicing people who need assistance in real estate transactions simply because they do not come to attorneys.
“They don’t think that they can afford an attorney, there’s not enough legal aid resources available that will help with real estate matters,” Russell says. “That also ties into the fact that the number of people who practice in the real estate area is on the decrease. While the need is increasing, the ability to get the assistance is difficult, at best.”
He is also concerned about this with respect to fraudulent real estate transactions, something he has heard about, though not personally experienced. “That, I think, is becoming more sophisticated with the advancements in computer technology,” Russell asserted. “I’m concerned that people are going to find themselves in a mess over their title or ownership and have no idea how it happened, or what to do about it.”
Outside of practicing law, Russell enjoys fishing. “I love fishing more than would be expected for one who normally does not catch anything,” he reports. He also notes that he always makes sure to wear a life jacket as he cannot swim.
