What are the biggest challenges you currently see in the M&A world?

I think the unpredictability and instability of the political environment has been a big challenge for the M&A market and will continue to be so for some time to come. Lack of clarity and unexpected changes in fiscal and regulatory policy cut against the stability that dealmakers crave and create an incentive for them to “wait and see” what happens next before engaging in a transaction.

Without revealing the names of a client, what is the most interesting transaction you’ve worked on lately?

I find the sale of businesses owned by large families over multiple generations fascinating and had the opportunity to work on one recently. There is a lot of emotion involved in selling something that represents a family’s identity, and it is difficult to work through it all on an M&A deal timeline. The personality dynamics and differing priorities are also a challenge, and it always feels like a good deal of luck is involved in getting everyone to the closing table at the same time.

How do you manage work/life balance?

I’m not sure balance is the right term for me as I’ve never been very good at separating my work and personal life. I typically have a list of combined priorities and work through them based on what is most urgent at the moment. That being said, if my kids need something, they get to the top of the list right away.

What is one thing you would change about Minnesota if you could?

I’m such a homer, I’m not sure I can come up with anything. I love the Twin Cities and its combination of a dynamic business environment and great culture with the accessibility of the outdoors. I grew up in Duluth, so I also love everything about northern Minnesota. I do miss the real Minnesota winters though and wish we had more snow for longer!

I secretly like the music my kids listen to! Don’t tell them!
