Former Redwood County Commissioner Gene Short is vying to run against freshman Republican Joe Schomacker in House District 22A next year.

Short is seeking the DFL endorsement for the seat now held by  Schomacker, a self-employed PR consultant from Luverne, according to a story in the Marshall Independent. The district includes Murray, Nobles, Rock and Pipestone counties.

Short retired in October from his post as director at End-O-Line Railroad Park in Currie, and he was an executive officer for the Association of Minnesota Counties for four years. He served as commissioner from 1993 to 2007.

Short told the Independent that Murray County DFLers tried to recruit him to run in 2010, but he was too busy with his job at the park.

Schomacker beat , a former DFL House Majority Leader, by more than 10 percentage points last fall. Both were vying to replace Doug Magnus, who ran for and won a seat in the state Senate.
