Tanya O’Brien, a prosecutor in the Ramsey County Attorney’s office, has been appointed a 1st District Court judge.

Gov. Mark Dayton made the appointment last week and announced it March 5.

“Tanya O’Brien has an outstanding record of public service and commitment to justice,” Dayton said in a press release. “I believe that she will be an exceptional district court judge.”

O’Brien prosecutes felony crimes for Ramsey County. Her caseload focuses on family violence crimes, including criminal sexual conduct and physical assaults involving children, according to a bio published online by the Mitchell Hamline School of Law.

O’Brien’s prosecutorial career began in 2005 as an assistant Scott County attorney; she joined the Ramsey County trial team in 2014, according to her law school bio. She previously worked as law clerk to 10th District Court judges Lynn C. Olson and Ellen L. Maas.
