Current events in Minnesota have been distressing for many, lawyers included. While lawyers are jumping in to help, it is impossible to pour from an empty cup. The American Constitution Society’s Minnesota Lawyer Chapter has announced a mental health CLE that can help lawyers get the support that they need during these turbulent times.
The CLE is an in-person, special event with Joan Bibelhausen, who recently retired as executive director of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers.
“As we know, Minneapolis is in the midst of a legal crisis,” the ACS Minnesota Lawyer Chapter states in a news release.
The organization notes that, when there is unresolved chronic stress, it is a predictor for substance use problems and mental health concerns including depression and anxiety.
“By understanding this continuum, the impact of our exposure to trauma, and the facts about addiction and mental illness, lawyers can reduce their risk and, hopefully, get help earlier when there is a mental health, substance use, or related problem,” the organization states. “By knowing these risks, we can also support each other.”
During the CLE, lawyers will understand the signs and risk factors of substance use and mental health conditions. Additionally, lawyers will practice the secondary trauma healthy response techniques in real time during the CLE.
The CLE is being offered from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. Lawyers must register ahead of time.
For those who are unable to attend but are suffering, there are resources for lawyers, judges, law students, and immediate family members. Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers Minnesota has a 24-hour crisis response. The number is 651-646-5590 or 1-877-525-6466.
