Nothing about working at Jeff Anderson & Associates is easy. The work is hard, the clients’ case histories are hard and even a good day doesn’t bring “good” news when it involves child victims of sexual assault.

As manager of client communications, Asja Karic Carrera is responsible for managing a team of legal intake specialists, working up cases, and providing emotional support and therapeutic resources to clients.

Karic Carrera’s work is informed by her history and the trauma she witnesses as a child of war.

Her first encounters with sexual violence advocacy came through the stories she heard of Bosnian rape survivors whose testimonies helped categorize rape as a war crime for the first time in history.

“Because of my origin and the injustice that I witnessed and experienced as my family fled for safety amid a genocide, I knew that I wanted to be on the right side of justice,” Karic Carrera said. “I had an itch to speak out when things seemed unfair, and a strong desire to listen to and support my fellow humans who had been harmed or on the receiving end of injustice.”

While she works on any number of the firm’s cases, Karic Carrera was particularly involved in the firm’s work in suing and helping to shut down the Circle R Ranch and on moving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles settlement forward.

What keeps Karic Carrera going working with heavy subjects? She keeps a running list of growth moments she’s witnessed in clients and thank you notes she’s received so she can refer to them on particularly tough days to end the workday on a positive note.

But, mostly, her continued desire to keep doing her work comes from the firm’s clients.

“My commitment to the work stems from my origin and the life-changing experiences I had as a young person,” she said. “These experiences brought me to the work. The fulfillment I experience from witnessing resilience and growth in the survivors we work with is what keeps me going.”
