What are the biggest challenges you currently see in personal injury law?

The biggest challenges I see in personal injury law are discovery abuses by the opposing party. Whether it is running up the cost of litigation with endless depositions, playing coy with answers and responses, or doing a scorched earth run in a case, the tactics can become overwhelming for many.

What advice would you give a client to avoid legal complications in a personal injury case?

Always, always be truthful.

Without revealing the names of a client, what is the most interesting case you’ve worked on lately?

I am working on an injury case and the adverse party provided alleged video of the incident. There were questions about the veracity of the video and the other party’s expert has even testified that the video snippet could not have originated from the video system/software. The depositions, briefings, hearings, and conferences have been extensive, but if it gets to the truth, they are well worth it for justice and the injured client.

How do you manage work/life balance?

Not very well! The work that I do is really important to me and it gives me purpose. I figure that purpose balances everything else out.

What is one thing you would change about Minnesota if you could?

If this question is about the state legal system in Minnesota, I would say really nothing. We are so fortuitous that we do not have to engage in expert discovery as I do in other states I practice in.

If this question is about Minnesota generally, I would love a few more months of summer-like weather!

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I love disco music! Yes, I said it. And recently I got to go to K.C. & the Sunshine Band’s concert. What a fun treat. I have never seen so many smiling faces and so many people with bad knees dancing to the music at a concert before. To borrow a phrase from K.C.: “Keep it Coming.”
