Professor Mark Kappelhoff of the received the U.S. Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service today from Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

The award, the highest given by the Justice Department for employee performance, honors Kappelhoff for his role in the civil rights investigation of the police department in Ferguson, Missouri after the shooting of Michael Brown.

The investigation showed that there was not enough evidence to support federal criminal charges but determined that the Ferguson Police Department engaged in unconstitutional and biased police practices. (Kappelhoff was on leave from the law school during the investigation.)
