Union wants judge to slap NFL over Peterson discipline

The NFL Players Association wants a federal judge in Minneapolis to hold the league and its commissioner, Roger Goodell, in contempt.

The union filed the motion on Tuesday with U.S. District Court Judge David Doty, who ruled in February that the league violated the terms of its collective bargaining agreement through the retroactive application of a new disciplinary policy to Vikings running back Adrian Peterson

According to the report in The State: “The NFLPA accuses the NFL and Goodell of ignoring a federal judge’s decision in February to overturn an appeal ruling made against the Minnesota Vikings running back despite the union’s repeated requests to do so…. The union also asks that the NFL be ordered to stop retroactively applying the new conduct policy to cases that occurred before it was in place, citing the 10-game suspension of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy last month over previous domestic abuse charges.”

The Pedal Pub hate is back

At City Pages, Susan Du reports the latest news in a free speech vs. trademark saber rattling duet spat between Pedal Pub Party Bikes and northeast Minneapolis resident Matt Peterson.

Annoyed by the sometimes boisterous conduct of pedal pub patrons in his northeast Minneapolis neighborhood, Peterson launched the “I Hate the Pedal Pub” page on Facebook a couple of years ago. After Pedal Pub Party Bikes sent Peterson “a scary and serious cease-and-desist letter,” Du writes, Peterson – who was worried he might be sued for using Pedal Pub graphics in a line of I Hate the Pedal Pub merchandise – shuttered the page.

Well, the hate is back.

According to Du, the recent e-launch came after Peterson got some legal advice and “learned that Pedal Pub was probably bluffing, since copyright law doesn’t restrict the kind of social commentary Peterson was carrying out.”

Latest law school bubble news: Pace slashes salaries

Has the law school bubble popped, or is it just deflating?  For New York’s Pace Law School, it seems to be a case of the former – for the time being.

While Pace has not been forced into a merger (like Hamline and William Mitchell) and doesn’t face the prospect of an imminent shuttering (like the Charleston School of Law), the belt has been cinched more than a few notches.

The ABA Journal reports that law professors at the school will see their wages slashed by 10 percent, while staffers will be cut by 5 percent. While those across-the-board cuts prevented layoffs, that probably won’t hold for long if current trends continue. Between 2011 and 2014, applications to the school plummeted by 50 percent and enrollment by 18 percent.
