Katherine M. Menendez, a widely respected 18-year veteran of the Federal Defender’s office fresh off a huge victory at SCOTUS, has been selected to replace retiring U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey J. Keyes.

A 17-member Merit Selection Panel, co-chaired by attorneys Thomas Boyd and Tara Norgard, recommended Menendez for the job, Chief U.S. District Judge John Tunheim said in a prepared statement.

Menendez, who joined the federal defender’s office as a Soros Justice Fellow, has served as the chief of training since 2006.

She made headlines last year when she convinced the nation’s highest court to strike down a portion of the Armed Career Criminal Act, a controversial Reagan-era three-strikes law.

She received her B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago, and graduated magna cum laude from New York University School of Law. Following law school, she clerked for the late Honorable Samuel J. Ervin, III, on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
