MINNESOTA 250 |

John M. Stern

Organization
Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A.
Title
Shareholder

John Stern has built his practice around the kinds of real estate projects that others find too complicated to finance — affordable housing developments, historic adaptive reuse, and mixed-use redevelopments that often require assembling ten or more funding sources to become viable. A shareholder at Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A., Stern concentrates his practice on tax credit financing and syndication, structuring transactions involving federal and state tax credits, tax-exempt bonds, tax increment financing, and layered public-private financing.
His representative matters include serving as developer’s counsel for a mixed-income project with approximately 200 units combining tax-exempt bond financing, tax increment financing, federal low-income housing tax credits and mezzanine financing, and developer’s counsel for the renovation of a historic factory into approximately 90 units of affordable housing using federal and state historic and low-income housing tax credits.
Stern serves on the American Bar Association’s Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law and has mentored attorneys through the Urban Land Institute Minnesota’s Young Leaders Group.
He earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2005.
