Matthew J. Barber, a partner at Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben, has spent his entire legal career at the firm, beginning as a night office assistant in 2008 before clerking during law school and joining as an associate in 2015. He was promoted to partner in 2025.

Barber’s practice encompasses personal injury litigation, including car and truck collisions, motorcycle crashes, and general liability cases, as well as appellate work handling motions and appeals. He has submitted amicus curiae briefs on behalf of members of the Minnesota Association for Justice and was recognized by Minnesota Lawyer as its Attorney of the Year in 2017 for his role representing thousands of Midwest farmers in claims that Syngenta negligently marketed corn seed, causing an international trade disruption.

Beyond his litigation practice, Barber serves as adjunct faculty at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. He earned his law degree cum laude from the University of North Dakota School of Law and his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of St. Thomas.

Key Accomplishments

Matt has argued several cases before the Minnesota Supreme Court and
several more before the Minnesota Court of Appeals. He has also presented oral arguments before the Minnesota Supreme Court on the issue of pre-verdict interest, a matter with significant implications for personal injury law in the state of MN. He was acknowledged by these courts in 2022 when he was appointed to the Advisory Committee for the Rules of Civil Appellate Procedure.
