Joni Thome is an attorney focusing on employee-side employment law, representing clients in cases involving wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and whistleblower claims at Wanta Thome. She is admitted to practice before the Minnesota Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. She is certified as an employment law specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association.
Thome’s notable cases include Bahr v. Capella University, in which the Minnesota Supreme Court established that an employee need not prove the underlying merits of a discrimination claim to prevail on a retaliation claim under the Minnesota Human Rights Act, and Frieler v. Carlson Marketing Group, in which the Minnesota Supreme Court held that employers are subject to vicarious liability for a hostile work environment created by a supervisor.
Thome founded the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association and has served in leadership roles with the National Gay and Lesbian Law Association, and she is a frequent presenter at the Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute.
