Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A. Shareholder Erin E. Mathern concentrates her practice on affordable housing development, tax credit financing and syndication, and real estate transactions. She began her career on the business side of real estate, spending more than a decade as a development director for a builder/developer focused on urban, adaptive reuse projects before entering law.

Mathern represents for-profit and nonprofit developers in transactions utilizing low-income housing tax credits, historic rehabilitation tax credits and other structured financing. Her experience includes the first development in the United States to close using HUD’s 221(d)(4) pilot program and the first low-income housing tax credit and opportunity zone project to close in Minnesota. She also represented the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians in the development and financing of a culturally-sensitive affordable housing community in Minneapolis.

Mathern serves as chair of the board of directors of the Minnesota Housing Partnership. She earned her law degree from William Mitchell College of Law.
