Abortion bills headed for likely vetoes

The last two bills taken up by the House on Thursday evening dealt with the hot-button issue of abortion. The first measure would prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions. The second bill would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy except in medical emergencies.

Bills aim to reset child custody rules

Rep. Torrey Westrom began Tuesday's meeting of the House Civil Law Committee with an unusual admonition. He asked audience members to refrain from booing, clapping or sighing during testimony. Westrom also noted that security officers would be stopping by to monitor the hearing room in the State Office Building.

VOICES of Conservative Women, a new political advocacy group, is honoring eight legislators for their work at the Capitol. The "Voices of Fiscal Conservatism" award winners, all Republicans, are state Reps. Laura Brod (New Prague), Mary Kiffmeyer (Big Lake), Mary Liz Hoiberg (Lakeville), Joyce Peppin (Rogers) and Peggy Scott (Andover), and state Sen. Debbie Johnson (Ham Lake), Amy Koch (Buffalo) and Julianne Ortman (Chanhassen).
