The three-decade veteran legislator announced last week that he was resigning to serve as director of the state’s Office of Higher Education.

Long-time DFL operative and Minneapolis city hall staffer Peter Wagenius will run for the open state Senate seat in District 59. Wagenius, 40, who is the son of Rep. Jean Wagenius is running in a special election to replace former majority leader Larry Pogemiller.

Minneapolis Attorney Jacob Frey has thrown his name into the mix for the Senate District 59 seat. Gov. Mark Dayton's office announced Friday morning that Pogemiller will be leaving the chamber to lead the Office of Higher Education. Frey, 30, just left his job as an attorney with firm Faegre & Benson to run for the seat.
