MN United PAC pledges support to 15 pro-gay marriage lawmakers

MN United PAC, the political fund formed by pro-gay marriage group Minnesotans United for All Families, announced its "Minnesota 15" initiative on Thursday, a list of lawmakers who supported gay marriage this spring that will be made "priorities" for the fund in their campaigns for reelection. Minnesotans United named the first five lawmakers on the list, which consisted of all rural Democrats serving in the state House.

Dayton signs historic bill to legalize same-sex marriage

The ceremony marked a dramatic shift in Minnesota, where two years ago lawmakers voted to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to ban gay marriages. Six months ago, voters rejected that amendment by a more than 5 point margin. Come August 1, same-sex couples in the state will be able to apply for wedding licenses and couples married in other states will have their union recognized in Minnesota.

Amendment to gay marriage bill could attract more Republican support

GOP House Rep. David FitzSimmons introduced an amendment to the gay marriage bill on Wednesday, the eve of a scheduled vote in the House, that would insert the word "civil" in front of any instance of the word "marriage" in state law. The freshman from Albertville says the move provides more religious protections by specifying that the bill is about "the civil aspects" of marriage.

Gay marriage to get a vote on the House floor Thursday

The vote in the House will come just six months after voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. House Speaker Paul Thissen has repeatedly said he will not bring the bill to the floor until he has the necessary 68 votes to pass the measure. The Senate is expected to take up the bill after the House, with Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk expressing confidence in its passage there.

Gay marriage bill clears final House committee ahead of likely vote

The bill cleared the committee in on a voice vote after a short discussion of a new fiscal note attached to the bill. Budget officials now estimate a law allowing same-sex couples to wed will cost the state about $688,000 a year to provide health insurance benefits to the spouses of state employees. The proposal is also projected to generate about $10,000 in revenue annually through collections from marriage license fees.
