Senate chair picks mix old guard with next generation

The Senate DFL has formalized its committee structure and appointed the chairs who will direct the flow of legislation through the byways of the legislative process in 2013. While the caucus has a bench of veteran senators who were chairs when they last held the majority in the 2010 legislative session, the retirements and deaths of other long-serving members in the last two years means that a new generation is joining the ranks of committee chairs.

GOP legislative minorities pick their leaders

The House and Senate GOP Caucuses have gone in opposite ideological directions with their leadership picks as they prepare to enter the minority in the 2013 legislative session. In the aftermath of Tuesday’s election that swept DFLers into control of both the House and Senate, the Republicans have spent the last two days behind closed doors to choose leaders who will try to steer their respective caucuses in picking up the pieces and articulating the opposition to the DFL legislative majorities and Gov. DFL majorities pick their leaders

Close on the heels of Tuesday’s election, members of the new DFL House and Senate majorities gathered behind closed doors on Thursday to elect their leaders. As expected, the minority leaders who helped steer Democrats back into control — Rep. Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis, and Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook — were elevated to House speaker and Senate majority leader.

Zellers won’t seek House GOP top job in minority

House Speaker Kurt Zellers said he won’t seek the caucus’s top leadership position when they hold their post-election meeting on Saturday. Less than 24 hours after both houses of the Legislature flipped from Republican to DFL control, Zellers said he thought it best for him to step aside.
