In-House Counsel 2022: Robert Maloney

For someone barely a decade into his career, Robert Maloney has experienced an array of legal worlds. Maloney is currently corporate counsel at phData, a Minneapolis-based company that provides companies nationwide with technology consulting services.

Before joining the team at phData, he worked in private practice at two different law firms, served as a law clerk in two county attorney’s offices and worked as a research assistant at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where he earned his J.D.

“I feel like I’ve always been a very curious person with a lot of itches to scratch,” he says. “I think I’ve used the experiences that I picked up in each of these roles as I’ve moved on to a new job.”

At phData, where he started in 2020, Maloney was instrumental in helping the company establish privacy and security certification, which has allowed the company to stand out from its competitors.

Maloney says about his current role, “What I like most are the people I work with. We have a bright, hard-working group of people who are always willing to roll up their sleeves to help each other. I’m wearing more hats in this position, so I need help from others.”

Outside of work, the former Eastview High School hockey player, who also skated four years at Providence College in Rhode Island, keeps his love of athletics close by volunteering with the InSports Foundation, a nonprofit that helps kids learn and participate in sports.

Maloney also stays connected to the University of St Thomas School of Law through its mentorship program. He is paired with a law student each year to help them get a taste of his corporate law experiences.

The St. Thomas alumni community lives up to its reputation of being close-knit, he says. Aside from his current position, each of his other jobs since earning his law degree have been obtained with help from a St. Thomas connection. Of course, being a hard worker eager to dive in and gain experience is an advantage as well.
