2020 Up & Coming Attorneys: Aaron Knoll

Never underestimate the value of a semester abroad. It’s how Aaron Knoll decided that accounting was out and the law was in for him. The time he spent studying in Germany as an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota led to the career change, and his clients and colleagues are thankful. Being overseas gave him clarity and a new outlook on life and pushed him to law school at the University of St. Thomas.

Today, this Greene Espel member is passionate about helping bring community to the firm and working with a wide range of business clients, many in the wind- and solar-energy sectors. Aaron also cares deeply about giving back to the next generation of lawyers, including as an award-winning professor of legal writing at St. Thomas law school.

What do you find the most rewarding or love best about working in the legal profession?

I love anything that involves an in-person interaction: strategizing with a client, taking a deposition, giving CLE presentations, really getting to know people. I can’t wait for a return to this aspect of practice.

What inspires you and motivates you to achieve your goals?

Those who I love the most — my friends and family, and my colleagues (who are definitely family too) — inspire me to constantly do better.

What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received?

My fourth-grade teacher was an early mentor. She taught us to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes.

Another key mentor, Wendy Wilding, always modeled a straightforward yet effective approach: focus on what matters.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I love to cook. I dreamt of being a chef; it’s a great creative outlet for me. I enjoy making a big feast — I took over Thanksgiving several years ago.
