Yvonne Miller is that senior director. Her team handles “everything from hire to retire” for non-attorneys at Faegre Drinker, and firmwide HR functions like benefits and compliance.
Co-workers laud Miller’s steadiness during the pandemic and merger. But Miller credits others for much of that steadiness. “It’s easy to be a leader when you have a really strong team,” Miller says. “No one does it alone.”
What do you find the most rewarding or love best about working in the legal profession?
I really enjoy the professional and intellectual working environment, working with people who are hard workers and who come in every day trying to excel. Part of what drew me to the law firm was working with the lawyers and learning from them and having that opportunity to listen to how they think about and solve issues.
What inspires you and motivates you to achieve your goals?
It really is the demands of the work. You never know what the day is going to bring, so it’s never boring.
What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received?
There are two: One is to plan for the 95 percent of things you can be prepared to respond to, so you can spend your time on the 5 percent of things that you couldn’t anticipate.
The second one is: Presume good intent. It really sets the tone for a positive mindset.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I love ’80s hair band music. I have two daughters, and they’re in their 20s, but they grew up with it and so they love it as well.
