He joined Best Buy as a store supervisor and worked for a time at its subsidiary, Geek Squad, before being hired as a law firm multimedia specialist. “I thought the job sounded pretty cool, I’ll try for that, even if I don’t know anything about law,” McCaffrey said.
For the past eight years, he has worked at Robins Kaplan LLP as a trial consultant mixing photography, video, graphics, multimedia presentations and “settlement videos” that can help drive out-of-court decisions.
“Settlement videos have skyrocketed for me since I’ve been here,” he said. “They’re day-in-the-life videos with families and dramatic footage of where an accident happens, with narration. …We tell the whole story, send it to the opposing attorneys and ideally get a settlement offer.”
Attorneys perform their work, primarily, on “a stage” akin to “watching a performance, and it comes down to who performs better,” McCaffrey said. “You have an audience, and it’s the jury.”
