2020 Unsung Legal Heroes: Laura Mitlyng

A week and a half into the pandemic in March, Merchant & Gould marketing coordinator Laura Mitlyng began a daily email newsletter to enliven the lives of staff working from home. She wanted to help them feel connected — and even make them smile.

She did both. “I was feeling disconnected and I was looking for something light-hearted and upbeat,” Mitlyng said. “I decided to put together a newsletter we send every day that has a column called ‘Three Bits of Joy,’ which includes a funny image, a whimsical activity and a creative recipe.”

It was part of a job that requires a wide range of skills touching on all things related to marketing. Recently, Mitlyng launched a customer relationship management database. She updates the Merchant & Gould website, writes social media, manages communication contractors, develops workshops such as a recent one on Linkedin, and plans events.  “I’m an outcome kind of person, I like setting up a line of things and seeing them through,” Mitlyng said.

What do you find the most rewarding or love best about working in the legal profession?

I work with an interesting group of people every day, which is really fun, and it makes it easy for me to learn something new — because they have so much knowledge and perspective to share. We have scientists, inventors and others who have a wide array of interesting backgrounds.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I was a competitive swimmer at Minnesota State University Moorhead for four years and it shaped me into who I am. The experience made me more disciplined and taught me the importance of getting things done and being on time.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am supposed to get married in October, so I am now getting prepared.
