A 25-year veteran of the legal field, Haupt-Coleman has focused on family law for the past decade. She shoulders a paralegal’s load while also handling everyday firm operations including scheduling initial client consultations and processing monthly billing.
During the COVID-19 crisis, her work has become even trickier, arranging consultations via phone or Zoom.
How and when did you know you wanted to pursue a career in the legal field?
It was in high school. I believed I might be an attorney, but I was more drawn to paralegal work because I enjoyed assisting everybody.
What do you find the most rewarding or love best about working in the legal profession?
The fact that I get to have my hands on everything that gets done in our firm. The variety is a huge factor for me, and I get a lot of that here.
What inspires you and motivates you to achieve your goals?
I’m motivated by the people calling us who are usually in the middle of a very important period in their lives. Family law is high-stress, so just being able to talk people down a little is very rewarding.
What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received?
You have to be flexible, and you can’t take anything too personally. People’s emotions will run high, and sometimes you bear the brunt of that. But you have to remember that it isn’t about you.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I donate plasma twice a week.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I do a lot of gardening. I also spend a lot of time with my two dogs and my family.
