2020 Unsung Legal Heroes: Adriana Mejia

Adriana Mejia wasn’t born and raised here, but she’s certainly become a Minnesotan since moving to the Twin Cities as a teen. After being born in Mexico and growing up in Los Angeles, Adriana has made this her home, graduating from Metro State University, raising her two sons here, and, for the last three years, working as a paralegal for the Children’s Law Center of Minnesota.

CLC provides legal representation to hundreds of children in the child protection system. Adriana is the only paralegal at CLC, and she’s responsible for tracking more than 900 cases at any given time, keeping track of upcoming court hearings, processing Social Service documents and communicating with volunteer attorneys to ensure court appearances are made.

She’s more than proud of the work CLC does to help youth who really need it.

“I love knowing that CLC is helping to change outcomes and improve the lives of the youth we represent,” she said.

What do you find the most rewarding or love best about working in the legal profession?

I love hearing the stories of the youth we represent.  Despite the adversity our clients face, they show a tremendous amount of selflessness.  I am oftentimes reminded of the innate goodness in people through the express wishes of our clients.  Our clients never cease to amaze me with their accomplishments, and at CLC we celebrate every small victory on their behalf.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I’m a big Tupac fan, still. I’m part of a generation of kids who grew up in L.A. in the ’90s, and we really saw ourselves in him, in his music. He really got what we were thinking and feeling.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I have two teenage boys, and my family and I enjoy the outdoors.  We spend almost every weekend riding ATVs, camping or going on road trips. Also, I have a huge family — it’s always somebody’s birthday — so we spend a lot of time together.
