U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven E. Rau has died

The following is a news release from the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota.

Magistrate Judge Steven E. Rau of the United States District Court, District of Minnesota, died on Friday morning, Nov. 8, after a courageous battle with gastric cancer. He was 63-years-old.  Judge Rau was initially appointed as a Magistrate Judge in the District of Minnesota on Jan. 14, 2011. He was reappointed to a second eight-year term on Nov. 9, 2018 and maintained a full workload until just a short time ago. He is survived by his wife, Christine, and children, Victoria, Alex, and Edward.

Chief Judge John R. Tunheim said of Judge Rau: “On behalf of the Court, I am very saddened to report that our colleague Judge Steven E. Rau has passed away. Judge Rau was a wonderful colleague, friend, and mentor to many in the legal field and beyond. He served the District of Minnesota as a judicial leader with dedication, thoughtfulness, and a firm commitment to justice. He brought to our bench an inimitable blend of legal knowledge, a resolute respect for the under-represented, and a great sense of humor. Judge Rau’s loyal friendship and infectious laugh will be dearly missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

Judge Rau received his undergraduate degree from Carleton College and his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law. From 2000 until his initial appointment to the United States District Court, District of Minnesota, Judge Rau was a partner with Flynn, Gaskins & Bennett LLP (now known as Gaskins Bennett & Birrell LLP), and before that was with Lindquist and Vennum LLP (now known as Ballard Spar LLP). He also served as a law clerk to former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Douglas K. Amdahl. Throughout his career, Judge Rau was dedicated to the advancement of his profession and contributed extensively to the Federal Bar Association, serving in many leadership roles throughout his career.

Visitation for Judge Rau will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday November 17 at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday Nov. 18 at Church of the Assumption, 51 W. 7th St., St. Paul. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in honor of Judge Rau to the Hon. Steven E. Rau Scholarship Fund, Mitchell Hamline School of Law, 875 Summit Ave., St. Paul, MN 55105 or to Catholic Charities, 1200 Second Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55403.  The District Court will be closed on Monday, Nov. 18 in his honor.
