In-House Counsel: Troy Gunderman

As a child Troy Gunderman found it fun “to negotiate a good result” whenever a dispute might arise. He parlayed that love of negotiation into a legal career, and he now is director of litigation at the Minneapolis-based nonprofit Educational Credit Management Corp. (ECMC).
Gunderman manages ECMC’s other litigation attorneys and directs his team in collaboration with local counsel in defense of over 400 cases across the country. Typically these cases involve federal student loans in bankruptcy litigation or alleged violations of federal and state consumer protection laws.
To ensure consistency while simultaneously litigating numerous cases spread throughout the country, Gunderman utilizes a streamlined approach but cautions that each case presents unique factors and must be evaluated individually.
“I enjoy the strategic process required with being involved in such extensive litigation in a particular area,” he said. “We have been able to create and shape case law in a lot of jurisdictions.”
Gunderman has a rich background in winning cases at the appellate court level. He regularly drafts or edits the appellate briefs and often makes the oral argument to the applicable U.S District Court or U.S. Court of Appeals.
Gunderman also volunteers, especially coaching youth sports. He said he “loves helping kids improve and develop a love for the game.” He was thrilled to have had the opportunity to coach both of his children, and an added bonus was coaching them each through undefeated championship seasons in basketball.
