In-House Counsel: Michelle Miller

As vice president and chief counsel, employment law at Medtronic Inc., Michelle Miller has focused a good share of her work on achieving a diverse and inclusive work environment for the company’s 80,000-plus employees.
Throughout her 23 years there, Miller has been at the forefront of various efforts to achieve those goals. For instance, Medtronic offers an array of “employee resource groups” to unite employees around shared interests or affinities. She serves on the VP steering committee of Medtronic’s African Descent Network and is also a member of the firm’s Women’s Committee.
“We are heavily invested in working with our employees of whatever characteristic or condition to make sure that they can bring their best selves to work and have an investment in making Medtronic’s workplace the best it can be,” she says.
Miller’s day-to-day practice encompasses everything related to the workplace for the firm’s employees. Her goal, she says, is to resolve any issues that might arise as quickly as possible through negotiations and mediations.
“We hope to work through all of the alternatives in analyzing a situation in a way that we can resolve them before they get to the courts,” she says.
Miller brings a similar focus to her commitments outside of Medtronic. She has worked with the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers for more than 20 years and is also a longtime member of the Executive Leadership Council, an organization of 500 of the top African American executives in the U.S.
