To the outside, the merger of Hamline and William Mitchell into Mitchell Hamline School of Law looked seamless. But it provided many “growth opportunities,” said Jennifer Lauermann, president of the Mitchell Hamline Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2016. That was the year Mitchell Hamline combined. It was a fantastic opportunity to take the best of each of the schools and create something new from that, Lauermann said.
As president of the alumni association board, Lauermann also sits on the school’s Board of Trustees and was on the strategic planning committee for the new school. She continued for a second year as president when her successor became unable to serve.
Lauermann believes that the alumni network at the school provides the best opportunity for students to find experience and explore different opportunities. That’s what worked for her. She worked in the alumni office at William Mitchell before starting law school and was a 1L representative to the alumni board at Hamline. That helped her get started in the clinical program at Hamline, which she ended up teaching and which led her to the Minnesota Appellate Public Defender’s Office, where she now works.
“It has been an amazing opportunity to contribute,” Lauermann said.
