Up & Coming: Jennifer Huang

Jennifer Huang initially wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and pursue a career in electrical engineering. While she did receive a B.E. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2005, graduating magna cum laude, her career sights had shifted: She wanted to become a patent lawyer.

Huang wasted no time, enrolling at the U of M Law School that fall. She joined Fish & Richardson in 2011.

Initially, Huang focused on patent prosecutions, helping companies and inventors pursue and obtain patent protection. But in the last year and a half, she has moved into litigation as well.

Huang has developed a particularly strong reputation for her skills in patent validity proceedings, one of the fastest growing areas of IP law. These matters involve patent challenges before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, or PTAB, and require skill sets that combine patent-prosecution and litigation expertise. She won her first PTAB case and has had continued to have a string of successes in that venue.

Huang says she enjoys both areas of her practice — prosecution and litigation — equally.

“I definitely like the variety,” she says. “I like being able to have a day of one thing and then a day of another. I think I have a pretty rich practice in that way.”
