Evan Berquist lived and traveled widely in Latin America before settling down to a career as a mergers and acquisition attorney at Cozen O’Connor.
After graduating from Stanford Law School in 2011, he clerked in Puerto Rico for two years. Fluent in Spanish, he worked for Cargill in Costa Rica and for a Washington, D.C., nonprofit focused on Latin America before attending law school.
The St. Paul native returned home and practiced law at other firms before landing at Cozen O’Connor in 2016.
“I am primarily a mergers and acquisition lawyer, but I try hard not to become too much of a mergers and acquisition attorney,” Berquist said. “What I like about being in a law firm is I get to do a lot of different things.”
He engineered deals helping a manufacturer sell half of its assets to a private equity company and helped a European medical products testing firm make acquisitions. In addition, he enjoys serving as outside general counsel for smaller firms, such as an online education company.
An active pro bono practice has given Berquist opportunities to represent several organizations.
“I think our culture and society has a pretty serious access-to-justice problem,” he said. “I see it as our responsibility to give back to people who can’t afford our full rates but deserve legal representation.”
