Up & Coming: Erica Holzer

Erica Holzer sees being a lawyer as a privilege that comes with a responsibility.

That’s why the Maslon associate performed more than 230 hours of pro bono service in 2017 and may more than double that in 2018.

Holzer played a key role on the Maslon team of attorneys working with the Innocence Project of Minnesota to provide pro bono representation to Terry Olson, who in September 2016 became the fifth person in Minnesota to be freed through efforts of the project. Holzer is now lead attorney in Olson’s civil rights lawsuit seeking damages for wrongful conviction and incarceration.

“It’s an obligation of the profession to ensure equal access to justice,” Holzer said. “One of the most direct ways to do that is to provide legal services to people who cannot afford them.”

In her busy litigation practice, Holzer represents clients in complex commercial disputes, product-liability litigation and appeals.

Holzer’s product-liability defense work is primarily focused on FDA-approved medical devices. She also has developed specialized experience in the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act.

Holzer, who clerked for then-Chief Judge Matthew Johnson of the Minnesota Court of Appeals before joining Maslon, also is an accomplished appellate attorney.

Holzer graduated second in her class at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
