Unsung: Daniel Owen

Daniel Owen’s job is figuring out what his law firm’s clients are going to want in the next two to five years, and how to give it to them.

He started as a “multimedia specialist” who would help Robins Kaplan tell its stories. Then the Interstate 35W bridge fell into the river, and a message to the defendants and the Legislature became crucial. Video recordings of people who are affected by an injury or a tragedy are very powerful settlement tools.

That work is done now by a team that he created as Owen has moved into a leadership post looking at the internal workings of the firm as well as its external focus on the future. In addition to hiring and preparing trial lawyers, enhancing the trial experience and developing business, the firm is looking at the practices and industries that it can serve down the road. For example, Owen said, what’s happening at the U.S. Supreme Court right now will affect how corporations do business.

He views his role as that of an investor in the law firm. “Our role is to accept the gifts we’ve received and enhance the institution.”
