Bar Buzz: UPLIFTed middle schoolers in trial

Students in the Maslon UPLIFT: Legal Institute for Teens completed their mock trial program last week with criminal assault trials before Hennepin County District Court Judges Mary Vasaly and Thomas Sipkins (retired).

Launched in September 2017, Maslon UPLIFT is a legal diversity pipeline program created to serve middle school students who reflect the rich diversity of the Twin Cities, the firm said in a press release. The after-school mock trial program is taught by volunteer attorneys who have spent much of the academic year instructing students on key criminal law and practice concepts.

“Seeing the engagement, enthusiasm, and advancement of our first class of student participants has been deeply gratifying,” said the program’s director, Catherine Ahlin-Halverson.
