The mantle of bar leadership passed from Robin Wolpert to Sonia Miller-Van Oort at the Minnesota State Bar Association convention June 15 and 16.

The convention keynote topic was “Race and Immigration in the 21st Century: Can Lawyers Unite a Divided America?” which reflected Wolpert’s emphasis this past year on diversity and inclusion. The speaker was Frank H. Wu, distinguished professor at the University of California Hastings School of Law and the author of “Yellow: Race in American Beyond Black and White.” Wu told the audience, “Diversity is a process like democracy. It’s a process, not an outcome. We march, we rest our weary feet, we march again.”

Wolpert gave the annual President’s Award to Chief Justice Lorie Gildea in recognition of her leadership in the court system and on behalf of it at the Legislature.
