DNR to announce decision on PolyMet environmental review

The Department of Natural Resources is getting ready to announce whether it will approve the final environmental review for what would be Minnesota’s first copper-nickel mine.

DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr has to certify whether the 3,500-page environmental impact statement for the PolyMet mine in northeastern Minnesota is “adequate,” meaning it meets the legal requirements. Landwehr had previously said he was likely to do so unless last-minute concerns arose.

The announcement is set for 1 p.m. Thursday.

Approval would let PolyMet Mining Corp. start applying for the permits it needs to build the mine near Babbitt and processing operations near Hoyt Lakes.

Environmental groups plan to keep fighting the project during the permitting process.

PolyMet’s supporters tout the hundreds of jobs the mine would bring to the struggling Iron Range.
