One of two top Democrats running for Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District is pulling out of the race.
Dr. Mary Lawrence announced her exit from the race to replace retiring GOP Rep. John Kline on Tuesday. She says she didn’t think she could win the party endorsement and didn’t want to divide Democrats by running in a primary.
Her exit from the race largely clears the path for Angie Craig to secure the party’s nomination. Five Republicans are vying for GOP nomination for the 2nd Congressional District.
Lawrence is a Minneapolis doctor who launched her campaign before Kline announced his retirement in September. She had loaned her campaign nearly $1.2 million, including $370,000 just since September.
A third Democrat, Roger Kittelson, is still in the race.
