Paul seeks some of Sanders’ backers In Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul is drawing a contrast with Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders as both seek disillusioned voters who might choose either party.

The Kentucky senator told a young audience Monday at the University of Minnesota to resist promises of free college and other government-driven programs as they size up 2016 candidates. He specifically mentioned Sanders, a self-described socialist.

Paul’s Minnesota advisers say the two men might be competing for the same backers in the state’s caucuses next year.

Paul is struggling nationally but has high hopes for Minnesota because it was one of the strongest states for his father Ron Paul’s 2012 bid.

Minnesota holds its caucus on March 1, a month after Iowa kicks off the nominating season.
