State due in court Friday in UCare’s public programs case

State officials being sued by a health insurance provider left out of public program contracts are due in court for their first hearing this week.

A Ramsey County District Court judge scheduled a Friday morning hearing in UCare’s case against the state. The hearing comes just days before a key start date for registration in Minnesota’s subsidized health care programs.

UCare filed its lawsuit against the state last week. The Minneapolis company alleges the state arbitrarily cut it out in a statewide bidding process for the contracts to cover Minnesota’s low-income residents on public programs.

UCare has also asked the judge to halt an early start to sign-ups scheduled for Sept. 2.

The state has defended its bidding process as a cost-saving measure and says it’s reviewing the complaint.
