Twin Cities attorney killed Sunday in light rail train crash

A Twin Cities attorney was hit and killed by a light-rail train over the weekend near the Minneapolis and St. Paul border. This is the first fatality on the Green Line route since it opened June 14.

Shana G. Buchanan, 42, lived a few blocks from the Westgate station. She was hit by a train around 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Authorities say she was wearing headphones at the time of the crash and may not have heard the approaching train.

She was declared dead at the scene and the cause of her death is pending, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Witnesses said she stepped directly into the path of a train despite the flashing red warning lights.

Buchanan practiced in criminal defense and also taught elementary school in the Minneapolis district. Her license was on disability inactive status stemming from and October 2012 incident, according to the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility. She graduated from the William Mitchell College of Law.

She worked on the 2007 murder trial of Daryl D. Johnson. He was convicted of the murder of a 15-year-old boy from North Minneapolis.
