The St. Louis County Board of Commissioners agreed to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a teen killed in a 2012 car crash.
Hannah Wilson, 16, of Virginia, was critically hurt and later died after being struck by an SUV while attempting to cross Highway 53 near the Mesabi Range campus in Eveleth.
St. Louis County, along with Benchmark Engineering, Jola & Sopp Excavating, and Jeffrey Reed, are listed as defendants in a case filed by the family of Hannah Wilson in May. Reed was the driver.
According to the St. Louis County Board resolution, the county has denied liability.
The resolution also says that the parties entered into a mediated settlement agreement calling for the $100,000 payment from the county, ending expense and risk associated with further litigation.
Commissioner Pete Stauber called the incident a “tragedy all around,” but said this is the best and most reasonable outcome of the situation.
