Two-term Republican state Rep. Andrea Kieffer says she will not seek re-election to her suburban House seat next fall.
Kieffer, of Woodbury, released a statement on Wednesday announcing her plans to step down, according to Woodbury Patch. Kieffer was one of only five Republican legislators to vote in favor of legalizing gay marriage this spring.
“I am not seeking re-election for House seat 53B. It has been an honor to serve for the last four years but this was never intended to be a career for me. I look forward to hearing what the next representative will do for our community and our state,” Kieffer wrote, according to Patch.
While Kieffer’s southeastern suburban seat has been considered a swing district, she won re-election last fall against DFLer Ann Marie Metzger by nearly 10 points. A new DFL candidate, Kay Hendrikson, has already registered to run in House District 53B next fall.
