State Sen. Dave Thompson registered a campaign committee to run for governor on Monday. Thompson becomes the fourth GOP candidate seeking to take on DFL Gov. Mark Dayton.
Thompson is expected to make an official announcement about his political plans on Wednesday. The two-term Lakeville legislator joins former House Speaker Kurt Zellers, Hennepin Commissioner Jeff Johnson and businessman Scott Honour in the field.
Other Republicans still mulling a bid for the state’s top office: Senate Minority Leader David Hann, state Sen. Julie Rosen, former House Minority Leader Marty Seifert and former House Majority Leader Matt Dean.
Thompson, who is an attorney, spent more than seven years hosting a conservative talk radio show. He is the ranking minority member of the Tax Reform Division and has championed “right to work” legislation that would prohibit payment of union fees as a condition of employment.
The chair of Thompson’s campaign is East Grand Forks optometrist Steven Gander. The treasurer is Lakeville mortgage broker Jon Koznick.
